Bergen is known as the gateway to the fjords, and once you are settled into your apartment, the whole west coast opens up. Take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen for a view over the city and its seven surrounding mountains, wander the colourful wooden houses of Bryggen, or spend an afternoon browsing the stalls at the Fish Market by the harbour.
Bergen is also Norway’s energy and maritime capital, home to Equinor’s operations centre and a dense cluster of subsea and shipping companies, which is why so many of our guests are here on business. Outside of work, the city has a lively festival calendar, a strong food and coffee scene, and easy day trips to Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord.
Both Altona and the Damsgård area put you close to everyday essentials too, grocery stores, bakeries, cafés, and restaurants are all within a short walk, so settling into daily life in Bergen takes no time at all, whether you are here for a week or a whole season.
Bergen Airport Flesland is around 20 minutes from the city center by taxi, and the Bybane light rail runs directly between the airport and downtown, with a stop close to both Altona and the Damsgård area. If you are arriving by cruise ship or ferry, the harbour terminals are within easy walking distance of the Fish Market and Bryggen, and only a short ride from your apartment.
Once you are here, Bergen is easy to get around without a car. The city center is compact and walkable, the Bybane covers the longer stretches, and buses fill in the rest. For day trips out to Sognefjord or Hardangerfjord, organized tours and public transport connections leave right from the center, so you can explore the fjords without needing to rent a car for your whole stay.
A hotel room works for a night or two, but if you are staying in Bergen for a week, a month, or longer, an apartment gives you far more for your money. Every Vander apartment comes with its own kitchen, laundry access, and separate living space, so you can cook your own meals, do your laundry, and settle in properly instead of living out of a suitcase.
